News: Sony announces next PSP and its mobile gaming plans

Sony announced the launch of NGP (Next Generation Portable) yesterday in the planned announcement in Japan. The preview images of the device definitely made it appear sleek and polished. The design of NGP seems to be a logical extension of the tried and tested PSP 3000 model.

Sony did release PSP Go after PSP 3000, but that did not pick up well because of the combination of price and design problems. The design and specification of this device makes it a serious contender and the only thing that could stand in the way is the price.

The device has a 5 inch OLED touch screen display, which seems to have taken some technological approaches from BRAVIA TVs to get excellent viewing angles. The device also has a multi touch screen interface on the back, which could give some innovative game play approach for some games. They demonstrated Uncharted and some other titles using the touch screen interface from the back.

It also has other sensors like Gyroscope, Compass and Accelerometer which have become a standard for anything electronics these days. This makes some of the games to integrate the motion controlled ability, especially for casual gaming.

When the PSP Go was rumored, one of the things most gamers wanted was to have dual analog sticks and Sony seems to have really paid attention this time. This device has two analog sticks, like the dual shock controller and has cameras on both front and back of the device.

Game media format has been a troublesome point for all Sony PSP formats. The original designs used UMD (Universal Media Disc), which was a format that was adopted only by Sony and was a pain to manage for portable gaming. PSP Go went completely opposite and went for download only games, but they did not port all PSP games into this format and hence people who had invested in PSP games, could not move on to PSP Go. In the new design, they are doing away with UMD and are going with flash memory based cards for the games. Users will be able to load, play and save the game progress on the same card. The cards though look similar to SD, don't have the typical SD card design. Sony may either introduce a new flash memory (nothing new from them) or as they claim may have a special way to save the data in these cards.

On the UI front Sony has made lot of changes and have gone away from the XMB (Cross media bar) interface that is used in TVs, PS3 and PSP and has revamped the UI with lot of social interaction. Some of the capabilities in the new UI allow the users to find other friends, know what they are playing and share information. This is similar to the friends group information that is shared in PS3 and if integrated well in games can make some competitive titles like Need For Speed Hot Pursuit

Some hardware specification of the device are
CPU: Quad Core ARM Processor
Screen: 5 inch OLED Multi touch capacitive screen
Rear Touch: Capacitive Type
Camera: Front and Rear
Sensors: Six Axis Motion Sensing (3 axis gyroscope and 3 axis accelerometer), 3 axis compass
Location: Built In GPS
Connectivity: WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth

Sony seems to have done well on the design front and now lets hope they time and price this right when it comes to market.
