News: Sony announces PlayStation Suite framework, clears way for Xperia Play

Xperia Play has been almost confirmed as the much rumored PlayStation Phone. It can be considered among the worst kept secrets in recent times. The device has been leaked many times and even got a preview by Engadget that was written about in my blog post yesterday. Sony's announcements about PlayStation Suite confirms the plans on this.

While some people were previously confused on how the Android platform and PlayStation platform are going to be integrated. The announcement from Sony about the PlayStation Suite explained how this integration will work. This is a cross platform software framework, which is like a Sony Game Store for Android games. To start with the store is going to have all the PSOne games emulated on the Android platform.

As per the announcement they are calling this a hardware neutral platform, which means they are not limited to smartphones, so we can expect this to reach other places like Google TV and possibly anywhere Android goes. More importantly these games available on Android will also be compatible with the NGP (next gen Sony PSP). This suite required atleast Android 2.3 and is inline with the Xperia Play details that were released.

This approach from Sony may extend the PlayStation brand beyond devices handled by Sony alone and they also have announced a certification process to validate the consumer experience. It is definitely an interesting move, which can promote gaming in Android market and revive PlayStation in mobile gaming market again.
