Skype gave a New Year gift for iPhone users, by allowing two way video-calling from its iPhone application. This application was available even for iPhone 3GS users and was not limited to Wi-Fi usage alone. Though the feature provided competes with the basic capability provided by the FaceTime application of Apple, this has been approved and continues to be allowed by Apple. We as consumers are definitely not complaining though.
The same goodness was not made available to Android users and we can blame it on the fragmentation of the OS for that. Skype is available on some phones and some carriers, but not on all the Android phones yet. At the same time Qik a rival company has been providing the same service to some Android phones like HTC EVO.Today Skype has announced that it is acquiring Qik for undisclosed amount, though the amount is speculated to me around $100 million. It is not clear on how the technology, brand or positioning of Qik is going to be leveraged. At-least Skype can say that they have two way calling on Android also.
