News: Catholic Church approves Confession app

Smartphones have made many activities simpler and have paved the way to get and share information very easily. In an interesting move, the Catholic Church in the United States has approved an iPhone app called "Confession" that is aimed at helping Catholics through confession and encouraging lapsed followers back to the faith.

The company Little iApps has developed this application with the help of Reverend Thomas Weinandy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Reverend Dan Scheidt, pastor of Queen of Peace Catholic Church. This application has also been approved by Bishop Kevin Rhoades.

The idea behind the application is to help Catholics to engage with their faith using digital technology. It is not meant to replace going to confession, but to help them in the act, which generally involves admitting the sins to their priest in the confessional. Catholics still must goto a priest for absolution.

I saw this article posted in Gizmodo and my initial reaction was of surprise. I can see Banking, Learning and lot of other things coming to smartphones and can even see applications to assist in religious beliefs. There are already many of those, but an application to assist in religious act and practice is definitely the first of its kind. It is all the more interesting that some churches consider the online activities to be hindering religious and family life, while others are adapting and evolving to reach people and provide ways to follow it

It will interesting to see how this is getting adopted by people and also the reactions among traditional followers. The additional details on the application can be viewed by drilling down on the source link of Gizmodo.
