In the past few months, we have seen number of patent related issues between manufacturers and platform providers of different Smartphones. Looks like the high tech manufacturers feel left behind are getting into the mix now. LG is fighting Sony for some patent infringements on its devices
LG has filed a case stating that Sony has infringed on four of its patents related to "the reproduction of data recorder on Blu-Ray Disc media" and it is being used in PS3 and few other Blu Ray players. This seems to be in response to an earlier claim from Sony that seemed to indicate that LG infringed on Sony's patents of mobile phones.
This is the classic circle of patent wars, when they report patent issues against each other and end up in a mutual settlement or just sign a check eventually. Sony had good revenue last year from its PlayStation last year and LG seemed to be noticing that. In an attempt to take Sony's attention, LG has requested the halt in PS3 console sale, till this issue is resolved.
I don't thing LG is going to get the PS3 sale stopped, but will either get the patent issue dropped or paid a huge sum for this stunt. They may need the sum, as they reported a huge loss last year.
