Gadget: HTC announces FLYER, Tablet with a difference

Microsoft tried with tablet computing in early 2000 and did not have much success, because of the lagging hardware improvements. When iPad was released as a magical, revolutionizing device it definitely got huge attention as always, in reality most of the tablets announced since then have been over-sized mobile devices. HTC has been making impressive Android devices and now they have announced HTC Flyer an Android device with some unique and useful features.

HTC Flyer will be an aluminium unibody tablet, with touch and pen interaction and the first tablet with OnLive cloud gaming service integration. HTC Flyer will be based on Android with HTC Sense UI that is completely redesigned for Tablets with 3D home screens. The tablet will also offer support for HTML 5 and Flash 10, which according to the company is an uncompromised way to browse the Web.

Touch screen interface has completely changed the way in which we interact with electronic devices. It has become second nature to swipe or scroll the screen for moving around the content. Still there are times, when I have felt the need for access to pen or free hand tools to capture illustrations / diagrams. We have digitizers available to handle these ways of data input, but it has not been made available in the tablet of this generation, till now. HTC is using the HTC Scribe Technology to enable to pen experience in its Flyer tablet.

HTC Scribe Technology as per the company will introduce a wave of integrated digital ink innovation that makes it easy and natural to take notes, sign contracts, draw pictures and even write on webpage or photo. Interestingly this is something that I was looking for recently, in which we can easily create content that could normally done on white-board to collaborate with others.

This device is likely to be available in Q2 of 2011 and the pricing is yet to be announced. The device will have 1.5 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 32 GB Internal Storage, 7 inch Touch Sensitive TFT screen and all other normal features that are becoming a norm for tablets.

When asked about iPad, Bill Gates mentioned that is it a good device, but it is still missing a pen to make it productive and useful. I completely agree with his assessment that for me to be productive at work environment with a tablet device, I definitely see the need for Pen / Digitizer that will allow me to create content easily. So this is yet another device to look forward to.
