News: Improve the relevance of your Google search results, with Chrome Extension

Google page ranking approach to prioritize the search results and indexing mechanism has been known for a while and some Companies have manipulated the Google search with content farms and false sites. The relevance of Google search results have been questioned lately and if you think you don't like the results from Google, then you have a way to fix it now.

The post in the official Google blog has detailed the working of a new extension from Chrome browser that will allow you to customize and refine your search results. The extension allows the user to "block" sites from the web search results and Google may aggregate this information from the user base to target the content farms.

Content Farms are sites with low quality content, which have little or no relevance to valid search conditions, but show up because of the way the page gets indexed. This has been the most important challenge for Google recently and was used by JC Penney in the recent finding in which their sites seemed to lead in lot of results, even for items that they should not be showing up.

This experimental extension for Chrome will show the link to block under each search result. Once the user chooses to block the search result, any information from the domain will be blocked for any future search. This is likely to be most effective against the Content Farm links that show up in search results.
In some cases if you have accidentally blocked a site, you can always choose to undo it immediately or over time. Users can scroll down to the bottom of search results to show the filtered items also as shown in the screenshot below
On a more permanent level the blocked sites list can be managed by clicking on the extension icon on the top right part of the Chrome window

Google definitely has an uphill battle against the Content Farms and in keeping its relevance of search results, but this move definitely seems to be in the right direction to leverage the ever growing Chrome user base. If you are interested in the extension, then you can download it from here
