News: Google announces One Pass, Digital Content Manager for Publishers

Google announced One Pass service for publishers and it could not have selected a better time. Apple had recently announced its Subscription model and changed its policy for content providers and Apps that offer subscription service. Apple has been received a lot of push back on this new policy and some are even consider legal course of action, so the announcement from Google and the approach taken seems to be a perfectly timed announcement.

The One Pass service from Google is meant to let publishers set their own price and terms for their digital content. The publishers signing up for this service, will directly work with consumers and give them access to the content across different platforms like website, mobile devices and tablets.

Readers who purchase the content from One Pass Publishers can use the same login credentials across devices to access the digital content. This sounds more like the way Google Books, Nook and Kindle apps work across the mobile / PC platform. The difference is that the publishers manage the content and access to consumers directly and not through a middle layer of Barnes and Noble, Amazon and Google.

Google brings in the service that publishers can leverage and are platform for making the service available and ofcourse the payment technology of Google Checkout to purchase the digital content. The service is currently available in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and US and will be expanding to other countries in the coming months.

From the announcement made it is not clear if this service is available to publishers for free, if so may have some ad network tie-in on the service. While Apple is trying to channel all the content purchase through their community and get 30% of the pricing, this offer from Google will sound lot more lucrative for the publishers and may be consumers alike
