News: Synaptics announces ClearPad, likely to make Smartphones slimmer

ClearPadSynaptics, the Company known for making laptop touch-pads have announced their new venture to build capacitive touchscreen. This new approach to Capacitive touchscreen from Synaptics is said to save 1 mm of thickness of devices. This does not seem much, but the relative benefits from the technology sounds promising.

Synaptics calls its approach as in-cell technology which in theory is similar to the approach from Samsung's implementation of AMOLED display. The thinner display approach from Synaptics is possible because it has merged its touch-sensing layer and display into a single layer. In a traditional touch screen panel, this is stacked as separate layers.

The reduction in number of layers in Synaptics means that it will have better display characteristics than the traditional touch screen panel. This means that the device using this display will have extra brightness and higher sensitivity  of the touch screen panels. The other benefit of this approach is that the touch sensitivity can be made available on top of the any standard LCD display to high-density display panels.

The video that has been posted in Engadget details this technology and also showcases another major difference. In the current touch screen device, you need direct contact with the touch screen and cannot layers of obstruction. This means that if you want to operate your device with gloves on during Winter, then you will not be able to, but Synaptics approach will let you do just that. I dont mind going for these types for screen, just for this capability. The panels from Synaptics are likely to start shipping in the next 9 months and let us watch how many people opt for this technology.
