Photography: Understanding Time Lapse with fascinating demonstration

Wikipedia reference states that Time-lapse photography is a cinematography technique whereby each film frame is captured at a rate much slower than it will be played back. When replayed at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing. Processes that would normally appear subtle to the human eye, such as the motion of the sun and stars in the sky, become very pronounced.

We have seen representation of Time-Lapse photography is numerous commercials and movies. It gives us the feeling of accelerating through time and a simple way to demonstrate this is by hitting the fast-forward and observing the video playback on the screen. For a normal movie, the characters will seem animated and even funny at times, but when it comes to Sun sets, Stars moving or flowers blooming the effect is truly mesmerizing.

I saw a video in Digital Photography School (DPS) blog that I follow regularly and was really impressed and motivated on seeing the video. The video demonstrated the TimeLapse technique by Josh Owens from MindRelic and referenced below. It beautifully demonstrates the life in New York, with nice music to keep you engrossed.

A video that does a complete 180 and shows the other side of life is more sooting, with its perfect blend of music.

This technique involves taking pictures / frames / shots at periodic intervals of time like 1 shot ever 30 secs / 1 hr / 1 day or even 1 week in some cases. Depending on the extent of exposure, the setup may need proper planning and housing to mount the camera and operate without issues. I have seen some videos that demonstrate this capability, but it was more from a static camera position. In the videos above, the movement of the camera relative to the frame of the shot, gives the users a different feel and gets you more into the video than the static camera reference.

This week has been a wake up call for me to take my camera out of hibernation and start exploring some of these techniques and learn something new. I will atleast make an attempt and will post some videos or photographs soon. You can hit the DPS blog or hit this link to know how to make TimeLapse photographs.
