Gadget: Creative Ziio Tablet, wrong timing and missed opportunity

Creative 70PZ033509HH1 ZiiO 8 GB 7-Inch Wireless Entertainment Tablet - White
Creative announced its Ziio Tablet launch with an impressive price point of $249 for the 7 inch Android tablet. With a platform that is capable, software that needs upgrade and a screen that is lacking is it really worth it?

The Zii platform from Creative has been promoted as hardware platform for Developers, OEMs and Vendors to leverage since 2009. The Media Rich Application processor in the device provides the ability to work with any operating system like Linux or Android for developers to experiment with or for vendors to goto market with.

In the case of Ziio tablet, Creative has decided to launch its own hardware in the 7 inch tablet version, with 8GB ($269)  and 16GB ($269) variations, Android 2.1 OS and a resistive screen. The price of the device for the 8GB version is fixed at $249 (same as Nook Color from Barnes and Noble) and the device has lot of audio enhancements including X-Fi technology as expected from Creative.

The reference hardware in terms of processing capability is already demonstrated and highly capable, but the older Android version and lack of capacitive screen definitely makes you wonder on what Creative was thinking. In a time when the tablet market is warming up, a powerful device with capacitive touch is expected as basics and coming up resistive display seems to be a missed opportunity for a good reference hardware from Creative.

I hope this is just the initial line up and there are capacitive screen offerings in pipeline for the company. In the current state, this is definitely not the tablet to go for. I still prefer Nook Color over this, for the same price point and better user experience.
