News: Yahoo opens its digital doors with 3rd party authentication

In a surprising move, atleast from my perspective Yahoo has announced that starting Jan 20th, it will be possible to login for Yahoo services (except Yahoo Mail) through Google (through OpenID) or Facebook Connect.

As stated in the Yahoo site, Yahoo has been supporting OpenID since 2007 and launched the first step towards this last year by allowing to login to Flickr using Google ID. With this new change, Yahoo eases the user experience by allowing the single ID for online services and not having to remember different credentials for each website / service. This is a one step towards the Single Sign On (SSO) like capability, where we will one day we using a single universal credential that will be accepted for all our online activities.

Some bloggers have noted that, even if 3rd party authentication is used, Yahoo will implicitly associate the external id to an internal one to track the users. While the use convenience is eventually undeniable, it will be interesting to know if Yahoo has any other motive behind this move.
