News: Amazon ready to fight Netflix, adds value for Prime subscribers

Amazon Prime is a membership service from Amazon which offers 2 day shipping, with no minimum purchase conditions. This service is definitely good, but a bit pricy for normal shopping habits and Amazon is adding streaming service to this to make it more appealing

In a move to add value to the current Amazon Prime subscribers, the company has decided to launch video streaming service from PC or compatible devices for free. The content selection is limited right now, but can definitely grow in the coming months. The launch of this service is also widely publicized in the Amazon home page.

This is definitely an interesting move from Amazon to make this membership to be more than just shipping and add value to it. They have promised that the pricing will not increase, but if they add more value-added services, then it may tempt more customers to opt for this membership. Amazon offers trial membership programs for Students, Parents and individuals and the streaming service is not available during the trial. It is available only for paid Prime subscribers.

If the content selection becomes better and comes close to Netflix, then it is worth considering the membership. As a trial user of the membership, I do like the shipping options and the kind of service I am getting.

  1. Video streaming will almost certainly face some large hurdles from the movie studios before we see anything approaching acceptable levels of selection. Also not sure what penetration of high speed internet access is to households, but that will also be a barrier to wide spread adoption.
